Viewing abundant greenery and natural settings has a true, positive psychological impact on humans. According to evolutionary psychologists, this is because greenery symbolized survival—ample food and a safe place to relax—but the ancestral source doesn’t really matter. We’ve all experienced the effect, and our fish feel the same! One of the best and quickest ways to provide your aquarium pets lush greenery (and offer to your Killis for spawning in) is to provide carpets of moss and there’s none better than Taxiphyllum sp. ‘Flame’.
This bright green creeping moss grows in a thick carpet with long, curly vertical growth which clumps to form a bushy flame-like shape. Easy to care for, Flame Moss creeps outward, horizontally, covering all surfaces on the plane, which allows for creative placement in aquascaping! This moss gathers all its nutrients from the water and has undeveloped root systems, its rhizomes fixing the mats in place on various substrates. Adding a moss mat also provides an area for biofilm and infusoria to develop as a food source for fry.
Flame moss is best suited for aquaria with water temperatures between 75°F and 84°F and a pH between 5.5 to 7.5. It thrives under low to medium light and does not require CO2, but can benefit from its addition. It does not need special fertilizers or other supplementation to thrive.
Beat the heat and forget the lawn. Focus on the moss instead!
